Since 2023, Guarene has officially become part of the prestigious circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The municipality, which is home to around 3500 inhabitants, is gently nestled among the Roero hills, an area which since ancient times has marked the internal border of the Piedmontese territory, between the Tanaro and the Po, particularly interesting both from a geological point of view for the presence of numerous gorges and splendid gullies, and for the historical events that have influenced the culture and traditions of this land over the centuries.

Today, Guarene is a beautiful place permeated by the ancient atmospheres of a glorious past, but also by the charm of the most interesting artistic avant-gardes and the sweet scent of the best food and wine excellences of our region.

After breakfast, departure towards Guarene where you will meet your guide.

The town of Guarene has one of the most elegant and intact historic centers of the Roero. The village at the top extends onto the natural panoramic balcony overlooking the plain of the Tanaro river. The town is dominated by the eighteenth-century Roero castle, a baroque jewel commissioned and designed by Count Carlo Giacinto Roero.

Walking through the winding streets of the centre, admiring the churches, palaces and many valuable monuments of historical and artistic interest is an experience worth having.

Visit:

The church of SS. Annunziata

A fine example of 18th century Piedmontese sacred architecture, the building has a Greek cross plan and is in Baroque style.

Piazza Roma and Palazzo Re Rebaudengo

The town hall building overlooks the square, built in the 19th centur, on the site where the Roero family had already found a vat house, a room intended for pressing and fermenting the must in the vats, and, subsequently, a theater equipped of boxes and boxes, testifying to the passion of the inhabitants of Guarene for theatrical works.

Another element that characterizes the square is Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, the first headquarters of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation. The palace is a historic eighteenth-century residence, the result of subsequent buildings, which have changed its internal structure over time. It is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation. Inside this museum complex there are side by side noble rooms used for exhibitions and new spaces intended for art workshops for young emerging artists.

San Michele church

It represents the oldest religious building in the country, mentioned in documents as early as 1379; in this place the contract for the sale of Guarene to the Roero was stipulated.

The church has always been the subject of partial renovations, additions, renovations and interventions, without ever being completely demolished and rebuilt.

The Castle

It is the symbol of the village of Guarene: this imposing building, built between 1726 and 1775 to replace the old fortress, allows Guarene to be recognized from many points of the surrounding area, due to its position on the top of the hill, well protected by a high embankment. To date, after a skilful restoration, the castle has become a luxury accommodation facility, but the main floor with the period bedrooms, the hall of honor and the Italian garden are open on Saturdays and Sundays for guided tours by reservation.

The service buildings of the Castle

Along the road that runs alongside the Castle it is possible to notice the entrance arch to a courtyard, surmounted by the Roero coat of arms. It was the entrance to the Counts' stables, also used on the occasion of visits by nobles and high-ranking personalities.

Still walking along the same street it is possible to see the ancient Roero spinning mill, i.e. the building intended for the breeding and processing of silkworms.

The Poggiolo

It is the panoramic point par excellence of Guarene since from it it is possible to obtain an excellent view both on a portion of Guarene and on the surrounding territory of the Langhe. It can be reached by walking along the paramuro walk, the ancient system of defensive walls under the castle
